Stepper Motors

A stepper motor (sometimes referred to as a step motor or stepping motor) is a motor with windings in the stator and permanent magnets attached to the rotor. It provides fixed mechanical increments of motion; these increments are referred to as steps and are generally specified in degrees. Stepper motors are ideal for applications that require quick positioning over a short distance. This technology allows for the use of an open-loop controller, which simplifies machine design and lowers cost compared to servo motor systems.

How Stepper Motors Work:

A step motor, in conjunction with a stepper drive, rotates in predefined angles proportional to the digital input command (stepper) pulses. A typical full-step system achieves 200 steps per revolution, this equates to 1.8º per full step. The motor’s position can be commanded to move and hold at a step without any position sensor for feedback (an open-loop controller), as long as the motor is sized to the application in terms of torque and speed.

AC Synchronous Stepper Motors

With synchronous motor technology, speed is directly proportional to AC input frequency – for example, at 120 Vac, 60 Hz, an AC synchronous motor will turn at 72 rpm. This speed can be varied by varying the frequency, although most applications simply use gearing or a belt- or chain-drive system to achieve the desired load speed.

Integrated Stepper Motors

Fuse step motor plus drive and control components into a single device. Integrated steppers offer a space-saving design that reduces wiring and saves on cost over separate motor and drive components.

A range of hybrid stepper motors with frame sizes from NEMA 8 to NEMA 66. All NEMA stepper motors are available in 4, 6, or 8 lead configurations for bipolar or unipolar operation. In addition to the standard configuration, our NEMA stepper motors can be designed and manufactured according to the special requirements of the customer.

NEMA Hazardous Duty Stepper Motors

Suitable for use in Class 1, Division 1, Group D locations. They are available in NEMA 34 and 42 frame sizes (90 and 110 mm), and provide minimum holding torques from 1.27 to 9.82 N-m (180 to 1390 oz-in). All explosion-proof stepper motors are available in 4, 6 or 8 lead configurations for bipolar or unipolar operation. In addition to the standard configuration, these hazardous location motors can be designed and manufactured according to the special requirements of the customer.

Stepper Gearmotors

Combine some of our most popular 2-phase hybrid 1.8° step angle NEMA 17 and 23 frame motors with offset spur geaheards to create simple but strong gearmotor solutions for applications requiring high torque at low speeds. The gearheads utilize high-strength steel and precision hobbed gears in one-piece clusters, housed inside a high-temperature, molded composite housing.

Stepper Motor Linear Actuators

Use a proprietary manufacturing process, which incorporates engineering thermoplastics in the rotor drive nut and a stainless steel acme lead screw. This allows the linear actuator to be much quieter, more efficient and more durable than the v-thread and bronze nut configuration commonly used in other linear actuators. Motor life is improved more than 10 times over the traditional bronze nut style – and it requires no maintenance and does not affect the cost. 

Tin-Can Motors

Tin-Can Step Motors (also known as Can-Stack Step Motors) are 2-coil permanent magnet motors. When poles are magnetized by electric pulses applied to the coils, they attract the permanent magnet rotor core in reverse polarities, thereby starting rotation.

Washdown Stepper Motors

Washdown & Food Grade Stepper Motors are conventional hybrid step motors which are dust proof and resistant to low pressure water jets. They are ideal for applications in wet factory environments such as the food and beverage industry or outdoor use. Key features include a nickel-plated brass cable gland, sealed laminations, a front shaft contact seal and an optional IP65 rated encoder cover for use with products that require feedback.
