Electromagnetic Clutches – Industrial Power-On Clutches

Electromagnetic clutches engage when DC voltage is applied to the coil. The resulting magnetic field pulls the armature into contact with the rotor, coupling the input and output shafts to transmit torque. When power is removed, the clutch disengages and the shafts separate. Engagement and disengagement are electrically controlled with no mechanical actuation required.

This category covers general-purpose power-on electromagnetic clutches across two mounting types and a wide torque range. Shaft-mounted clutches mount directly on the shaft and are suited for parallel shaft applications. Flange-mounted clutches mount to a bulkhead perpendicular to the shaft and are suited for in-line shaft configurations. Clutch-coupling variants join two in-line shafts directly without a separate coupling component.

Electromate carries electromagnetic clutches from Inertia Dynamics and Ogura Clutch. Inertia Dynamics covers fractional in-lb through mid-range torque in shaft and flange configurations, all UL recognized to U.S. and Canadian requirements. Ogura extends the range upward — the AMC series handles compact zero-backlash applications, the VC and MSC-T cover general industrial single-disc duty up to 738 ft-lbs, and the MMC series handles heavy-duty applications up to 1,475 ft-lbs.

Electromagnetic Clutches – Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a shaft-mounted and flange-mounted electromagnetic clutch?

A shaft-mounted clutch mounts the entire assembly directly on the rotating shaft, retained by an anti-rotation tab or bracket. It is suited for parallel shaft applications where both the input and driven shafts are side by side. A flange-mounted clutch mounts the field assembly to a stationary bulkhead perpendicular to the shaft. It is suited for in-line shaft configurations and applications where a fixed mounting surface is available.

What is the difference between a clutch and a clutch coupling?

A standard electromagnetic clutch couples two parallel shafts — the armature hub and rotor share the same shaft, and the clutch transmits torque to a second parallel shaft via a pulley, gear, or sprocket on the armature hub. A clutch coupling joins two in-line shafts directly — the armature mounts to the load shaft and the rotor mounts to the input shaft. Inertia Dynamics SO and FO series are clutch couplings. SL, BSL, FL, and FO series are standard parallel-shaft clutches.

What electromagnetic clutch series is right for high-torque industrial machinery?

The Ogura MSC-T covers 9 to 738 ft-lbs with bore sizes from 15 to 70 mm at 24 VDC. The Ogura MMC covers 37 to 1,475 ft-lbs with bore sizes from 25 to 80 mm at 12 or 24 VDC. For torque requirements below 200 in-lbs, the Inertia Dynamics SL, SO, FL, and FO series cover the range with UL recognized units at 12, 24, and 90 VDC.

What is the Ogura AMC series used for?

The Ogura AMC series is a compact zero-backlash electromagnetic clutch for applications requiring precise, repeatable engagement at low to mid torque levels (2 to 70 in-lbs). The leaf spring armature eliminates spline backlash and allows torque to be varied by adjusting applied current, enabling control of acceleration time and slip torque. The AMC-E variant is RoHS compliant and draws lower wattage while maintaining equivalent torque output.

Are Inertia Dynamics electromagnetic clutches UL recognized?

Yes. All standard Inertia Dynamics electromagnetic clutches — SL, BSL, SLB, SO, FL, and FO series — are UL recognized to both U.S. and Canadian safety requirements.

What voltage do electromagnetic clutches operate at?

Inertia Dynamics clutches are available in 12 VDC, 24 VDC, and 90 VDC depending on series and size. Ogura AMC, VC, and MSC-T clutches operate at 24 VDC. Ogura MMC clutches are available in 12 VDC and 24 VDC depending on model. 24 VDC is the most common selection for industrial automation applications.
