Power-Off Brakes (Spring-Applied)

Power-off brakes engage when electrical power is removed and release when voltage is applied. This fail-safe behavior is the defining characteristic — if power is cut intentionally or lost unexpectedly, the brake applies automatically. No control signal required to hold the load.

The engagement mechanism is a set of compression springs that clamp a friction disc against the armature when de-energized. Applying DC voltage to the coil generates an electromagnetic field that compresses the springs and creates an air gap between the friction disc and armature, releasing the brake.

Power-off brakes are the correct choice for vertical axes where a dropped load is a safety risk, servo and stepper motor holding applications, emergency stop (E-stop) functions, parking brake duties at zero RPM, and any axis where power loss must result in a held or stopped condition.
