Some applications don't fail on torque or speed. They fail because the motor wasn't built for where it's installed. Specialty and environment-rated motors are servo motors qualified against a specific operating hazard: washdown and sanitation cycles, explosive atmospheres, or downhole heat and pressure. Electromate supplies three categories, each built around a different hazard type.
What Makes a Motor "Environment-Rated"?
A standard servo motor is rated for typical indoor industrial conditions. An environment-rated motor carries certification against one defined hazard: ingress protection for washdown and contamination, explosion-proof classification for flammable gas, vapor, or dust, or extreme-condition ratings for heat, pressure, and shock. That certification determines where the motor can legally and safely be installed. It's a separate spec from torque, speed, or frame size, and it has to be checked independently.

Certification / Rating
Typical Environments
Washdown & Food-Grade Motors
Water, cleaning chemicals, contamination
IP67 to IP69K; food-safe lubricants and materials for incidental contact
Food & beverage, dairy, pharmaceutical
Hazardous Location & Explosion-Proof Motors
Flammable gas, vapor, combustible dust
Class I Div 1/2, Zone 2/22, ATEX, IECEx, UL/CSA
Oil & gas, chemical processing, mining, grain and flour milling
Downhole & MWD Motors
Extreme heat, pressure, shock, and vibration
Rated past 200°C; up to 1,700 bar (25,000 psi); optional ATEX
Oil & gas drilling: MWD, LWD, RSS, downhole valve actuation
Downhole & MWD Motors
maxon Heavy Duty (HD) brushless servo motors are built for conditions past what standard industrial motors are rated for: sustained operation above 200°C, pressure up to 1,700 bar (25,000 psi), vibration to 25 grms, and shock loads to 1,000 G in select systems. Housings are hermetically sealed stainless steel, with optional ATEX certification and redundant winding for mission-critical reliability. These motors run Measurement While Drilling (MWD), Logging While Drilling (LWD), Rotary Steerable Systems (RSS), and downhole valve actuation.
Kollmorgen AKM Washdown and AKM Food Grade motors, along with the stainless steel W and HKM series, carry IP67 to IP69K sealing with a protective 2-K coating and stainless steel hardware on critical interfaces. Food-grade versions add compliant lubricants and materials rated for incidental food contact under FDA requirements. Washdown resistance and food-grade suitability are two separate qualifications. Some applications, like wet food-processing lines, need both at once.
Certification here follows two systems: Class/Division in North America, Zone under ATEX/IECEx internationally. Which one applies depends on the specific gas, vapor, or dust present and how often it's expected to occur. Kollmorgen's AKME series covers Zone 2 and Zone 22 under ATEX and IECEx. The Goldline EB and EBH series cover Class I, Division 1, Groups C & D under UL and CSA, including high-voltage configurations. NEMA 42 and 66 explosion-proof synchronous motors deliver up to 1,500 oz-in (1,059 N-cm) for Class I, Division 1, Group D locations.
Designed for closed-loop servo control in applications involving flammable gases, vapors, or combustible dusts, while maintaining mechanical and control compatibility with standard AKM motors.
If the hazard is water, cleaning chemicals, or contamination control: washdown & food-grade.
If the hazard is an explosive atmosphere from gas, vapor, or dust: hazardous location & explosion-proof.
If the hazard is downhole heat, pressure, or shock: downhole & MWD.
If an application spans more than one hazard, such as a hazardous-area food plant, confirm both certifications are available on the same platform before specifying.
When specifying a motor for regulated environments, confirm:
Area classification (Class/Division or Zone)
Required IP rating
Surface material and sanitation requirements
Voltage and torque requirements
Drive compatibility
Hazardous rating, washdown rating, and hygienic design address separate compliance frameworks. Selection must match the installation environment.
