Synapticon

Electromate is the exclusive Canadian distributor for Synapticon. Synapticon is a German motion control manufacturer based in Schönaich. The company builds actuators and servo motors with the servo drive, encoder, and safety functions built into the housing. There is no separate drive cabinet to wire or mount.

Synapticon's core technology is the SOMANET servo drive platform. It runs inside the actuator or motor itself. This removes the external servo drive from the machine architecture, cuts cabling, and reduces the total installation footprint. Functional safety is built in as well. Depending on the product line, Synapticon offers Safe Torque Off (STO) and full Safe Motion via FSoE, certified to SIL3 PLe / Category 3.

Synapticon serves four main product categories. ACTILINK-JP is a strain wave (wavegear) actuator line built for high-precision positioning. ACTILINK-JD is a planetary gearbox actuator line built for high dynamic response in humanoid and legged robots. ACTILINK-S is an integrated servo motor line for general machine axes. Custom Actuators is an engineered-to-order program for applications that fall outside the standard catalog, including humanoid production programs.

Applications include humanoid robots, robot arms and cobots, AMRs and AGVs, and general machine building. Common industries: semiconductor manufacturing, medical robotics, packaging, and mobile robotics.

Which Synapticon Line Fits Your Application?

ACTILINK-JP High Precision Actuators

Need the tightest positioning accuracy? Use ACTILINK-JP. The strain wave gear holds position accuracy under load. This is the right line for semiconductor handling, medical robot joints, and inspection equipment where backlash and position drift are not acceptable.

ACTILINK-JD High Dynamic Actuators

Need high dynamic response in a light package? Use ACTILINK-JD. The planetary gearbox and motor combination is built for fast acceleration and low mass. This is the standard starting point for humanoid robot joints, quadrupeds, and exoskeletons.

ACTILINK-S Integrated Servo Motors

Need to replace a conventional servo motor with something more compact? Use ACTILINK-S. It is a drop-in servo motor footprint with the drive, encoder, and safety functions already inside the housing. One cable carries DC power, fieldbus, and STO.

Synapticon Custom Actuators

Need something the standard catalog does not cover? Synapticon's Custom Actuators program is engineered-to-order. Synapticon builds the motor, gearbox, brake, encoder, and drive combination around your mechanical envelope, from prototype through mass production.

Gear options include planetary, strain wave, cycloidal, or direct-drive. Motor power ranges from 50 W to 2 kW. Safety can be built up to SIL3 PLe, differentiated by joint criticality within a single robot. This path is common for humanoid programs moving from ACTILINK-JD prototypes into joint-specific production actuators, and for AMR or cobot programs at volume where a standard frame size doesn't fit.

Custom Actuators requires a requirements review before quoting; there is no standard part number to select from.

Synapticon Safety Features:

SOMANET Safe Motion offers SIL3, PLe-certified safety functions via FSoE (FailSafe over EtherCAT) or standard I/O. It mounts between the processor module and drive module, so no hardware modification or extra cabling is needed to add safety.

STO — Safe Torque Off

Prevents unplanned restart of the axis. Enables safe working around moving axes.

SBC — Safe Brake Control

Safely activates a holding brake. Always runs in parallel with STO, and is used together with STO or SS1. Prevents axis movement while the drive is torque-free.

SBT — Safe Brake Test

Verifies the holding brake is functioning correctly. Must be implemented in the safety controller using safe process data.

SS1 — Safe Stop 1

Brings the motor to a quick, safe, controlled stop and standstill.

SS2 — Safe Stop 2

Switches the motor off quickly and safely. Once the motor reaches standstill, it triggers a Safe Operating Stop (SOS).

SLS — Safely Limited Speed

Ensures the drive doesn't exceed a defined speed limit. Triggers an error response if the limit is exceeded.

SLP — Safely Limited Position

Monitors that the drive, and the element it moves, stays within defined end positions. Must be implemented in the safety controller using safe process data.

SLT — Safely Limited Torque

Reduces torque within a defined time window. If torque exceeds the monitored limit, the drive responds with a safe stop. Must be implemented in the safety controller using safe process data.

Safe Velocity Process Data

Delivered via FSoE, 7 ms cycle time.

Safe Position Process Data

Delivered via FSoE, 7 ms cycle time.

Safe Torque Process Data

Delivered via FSoE, 7 ms cycle time, when a safe torque sensor is connected to the safe analog input.

Safe Digital I/O and Safe Analog Input

Delivered via FSoE, 7 ms cycle time.

Frequently Asked Questions About Synapticon

What makes Synapticon actuators different from a standard motor and gearbox pairing?

The servo drive, encoder, and (on most lines) functional safety are built into the actuator or motor housing. There is no external servo drive to mount in a control cabinet. This cuts cabling and panel space.

Is Electromate the exclusive Synapticon distributor in Canada?

Yes. Electromate is the exclusive Canadian distributor for Synapticon products, including ACTILINK-JP, ACTILINK-JD, ACTILINK-S, and Custom Actuators.

Can Synapticon actuators run on EtherCAT?

Yes. ACTILINK-JP and ACTILINK-JD run on EtherCAT (DS402). ACTILINK-S also supports EtherCAT, plus PROFINET with IRT and EtherNet/IP.

Do these products carry functional safety certification?

ACTILINK-JP and ACTILINK-JD support Safe Motion via FSoE, certified to SIL3, PLe, Category 3, depending on frame size and drive variant. Custom Actuators can be built to the same level, differentiated by joint criticality within one robot.

Are Synapticon products available for direct purchase, or quote only?

Standard ACTILINK products are configured and quoted for your application. Custom Actuators require a requirements review before quoting, since the design is built around your specific mechanical envelope.
