Encoders are pivotal sensor components in mechatronic automation, converting mechanical motion into an electrical signal that can be interpreted for precise control and positioning of mechanical parts. This article explores various types of encoders, focusing on their unique components, advantages, and applications.

An absolute encoder creates a unique position signal available anywhere along travel; its exact angle is reported when in power cycling mode. While absolute encoders measure absolute or true angular position, incremental encoders measure the actual change in angular position. And unlike absolute, incremental encoders do not generate a unique signal.
