An absolute encoder creates a unique position signal available anywhere along travel; its exact angle is reported when in power cycling mode. While absolute encoders measure absolute or true angular position, incremental encoders measure the actual change in angular position. And unlike absolute, incremental encoders do not generate a unique signal.

An incremental encoder is a device used for converting the angular motion or position of a shaft into a digital or analog code for the purpose of measuring a fluctuation in position or motion.

These encoders provide the control system with position feedback to single- or multi-turn operating ranges.

POSITAL has introduced a series of measuring wheel accessories for its IXARC family of rotary encoders. When one of these wheels is mounted on the shaft of an encoder, the result is an accurate and reliable instrument for measuring linear motion and position.
“Rotary encoders do a great job of measuring rotary motion in shafts and other machine components,” comments Jarrod Orszulak, Product Manager at POSITAL-FRABA Inc. “However, for many motion control systems, accurate linear positioning is the main objective. With the new measuring wheels, we have a very convenient way of making linear displacement measurements while taking advantage of the proven performance of our extensive line of rotary encoders. This is a great solution for equipment positioning tasks or for cut-to-length applications.”
The new measuring wheels are available in circumferences of 200 mm and 500 mm. When fitted to multi-turn IXARC absolute encoders, this would translate into a linear measurement...Categories: Product Announcements - Posted: November 19, 2015

For year’s controls and systems engineers have had to balance the robustness of magnetic encoders with the performance of optical encoders. However, this is no longer the case due to recent advances in magnetic sensing technologies. Breakthroughs in microprocessing and signal filtering have resulted in new magnetic encoders that can rival the performance of optical sensors while being more robust and compact. Learn how to select an encoder for a given application and what the future holds.\

In this video, Christian Leeser, partner, FRABA Group, talks about rotary and linear motion sensing for industrial and harsh environment applications. Leeser also introduces the UBIFAST Programmable Encoder 2.0 tool for the IXARC series of rotary encoders from POSITAL, designed to simplify device implementation by designers, maintenance staff and distributors. Available in North America in early 2015, the tool’s integration of web-based software in mobile devices such as tablets, smart phones and notebooks, and the POSITAL cloud support service, makes it an exemplary example of an Internet of Things hardware deployment.
