This document describes the evolution of motion and control system architectures and what new benefits are realized today when using EtherCAT®, whether for a large number of axes or simple systems using just a few. OEMs have many choices available and naturally gravitate to a given architecture in order to speed development and reduce costs. Machine systems, and mainly motion control, are normalized to meet the requirements of the application.
Highlighted too is not only the rise and acceptance for network connected motion control applications but also why they are here to stay. In fact, the continued demand for servo solutions like those provided by EtherCAT-based systems will grow faster than most others and come at lowered system costs to implement…

ESCON servo controllers from Maxon Motor AG are small-sized, powerful 4-quadrant PWM servo controller for the highly efficient control of permanent magnet activated DC motors. The featured operating modes – speed control (closed loop), speed control (open loop), and current control – meet the highest requirements for the Industrial Automation market. The ESCON servo controllers are designed being commanded by an analog set value and features extensive analog and digital I/O functionality and are being configured via USB interface using the graphical user interface “ESCON Studio” for Windows PCs.

maxon motor provides effective help for drive selection.
The extensive collection with illustrations and descriptions includes formulae, terminology and explanations of the calculations that are relevant for drive systems. A flow chart provides assistance in selecting the right drive for each purpose.
The Formulae Handbook lists the most important formulae in relation to all components of the drive system. It makes use of a flow chart that supports quick selection of the correct drive. Numerous illustrations and the clear descriptions of the symbols on the respective page make it easier for the reader to understand the formulae.
Roughly speaking, it is a collection of the most important formulae from the maxon catalog...Categories: Technical Support - Posted: August 02, 2011
The new Galil Sine drive amplifiers are a welcome addition to the existing DMC-40×0 and DMC-41×3 line-up of servo and stepper amplifiers – yet the addition of the new amplifiers also brings up a question – “When should I use a sinusoidal drive instead of a trapezoidal drive?”. This article will go over the Galil brushless servo drive architecture and highlight what you should know when making an amplifier selection.
Two Loop Architecture
In order to gain a better understanding of servo amplifiers and specifically how the Galil servo amplifiers work, the first thing to do is to understand the Controller/Amplifier architecture. Unlike most single axis drives on the market, Galil uses a split sample rate. The first and highest speed sample rate occurs on the amplifier and is used on the current loop. The D3540 Sinusoidal amplifier runs its current loop at 33 kHz and the D3040 Trapezoidal amplifier...
