Answer: Some slight differences in their magnetic design.
There are several factors that define the type of motion or motor that is best for an application. Directly driving a shaft is not new technology. Moving slow, smooth and accurate while positioning in fine increments takes the right combination of technology. The selection of a motor, encoder, bearing system, and motor controller all contribute to the end result.
Motors that are designed for direct... - Posted: August 12, 2013
Often overlooked when sizing DC motors is the Speed-Torque Gradient.
The Speed-Torque Gradeint is defined as Δn / ΔM [rpm/mNm] .
The speed / torque gradient is an indicator of a motor’s performance. The smaller the value, the more powerful the motor and consequently the less motor speed varies with load variations. It is based on the quotient of ideal no-load speed and ideal stall torque.
The speed torque-gradient can be considered a measure of the motor strength, which is defined by motor type and size and not the winding selected. Basically it’s how much speed drop the motor will have for each 1mNm of torque applied.
In the figure below, enhancing the load torque leads to a linear reduction of the speed. Thus it becomes clear what the meaning of Δn/ΔM is: It’s the gradient of the speed-torque line.

The choice between a servo and stepper motor is an important decision in any system design. In general, the higher the performance requirement (high precision, variable load, high duty cycle, high torque vs. speed) the more likely a servo will be the choice. Where purchase cost is critical, performance is not crucial, and simple set-up is needed, a stepper solution is a cost-effective option.
The following chart compares the performance of brush/brushless servo and stepper motors:
With stepper motors, closing the position loop via an encoder is not an effective means of providing increased precision. Whereas the encoder will provide position verification, the step...

Fast and easy with just a few parameters.
A new web tool by maxon motor, the leading provider of precision drives and systems, is now available at selection.maxonmotor.com. The “maxon selection program” (MSP) looks for appropriate drive systems that match the individual specifications of the user. In the simplest case scenario, the user only has to enter the supply voltage, the load speed and the load torque of the application.
The MSP is seamlessly integrated into the online catalog and e-shop of maxon motor, which contains 2700 products (brushed and brushless DC motors, gearheads, sensors, controllers). This means the user can select and order the suggested drive systems online from anywhere in the world, around the clock.
For drive specialists, the MSP provides an advanced search with additional parameters for specifying...

Experts pretty much agree that motor torque is proportional to motor current and motor speed is proportional to drive supply voltage, but do you know when this might not be true? This paper reviews the performance of constant current stepper drive across the motor speed range and the impact of the motor’s inductance, back-EMF and supply voltage on both low speed and high speed operation.Download Now

At times, customers reach out to us in search of either standard or custom motors that are designed to withstand and excel in demanding conditions involving water, dust, or other external debris. In such scenarios, our team of dedicated Application Engineers takes charge, initiating a comprehensive inquiry into Ingress Protection (IP) ratings. These ratings, governed by the International Standard IEC 60529, serve to categorize and assess the level of protection a motor offers against the infiltration of foreign substances and liquids. The intention behind this standard is to empower users with a clearer comprehension of a motor's capabilities.
IP ratings can be dissected into two primary categories – solids and liquids. This entails that the motor boasts protection against particles as small as 1 mm, while additionally demonstrating resilience against splashes of water that might otherwise compromise its functionality.
In specific instances, customers express a need for specialized...

Petroleum is the black gold of the earth – to get to this treasure, innovative and modern technology for recovery of petroleum and natural gas is required. The materials used in deep drilling are subjected to extreme conditions: Up to 200°C, vibrations and very high pressures. Motors by maxon motor are used for many tasks, such as operation of the valve controllers, as well as for triggering mechanisms and measuring devices.
Today, almost all cars require fuel and many heaters would not work without oil. In short: More than 85 percent of the global energy consumption is based on fossil fuel sources, i.e. oil, gas and coal. But to get to these valuable resources of our planet, it is necessary to drill deeper and deeper – no easy enterprise. Deep drilling technology (called “downhole drilling” in the field of oil and gas exploration) makes it possible to recover oil and gas from depths of more than 2,500 m. ...
